Svitzer Australia will bring three state-of-the-art new build tugs to the Port of Geraldton as part of a non-exclusive license for towage services with Mid West Ports, which last year handled trade exceeding AUD $6.1b in value.

Three new tug boats for Mid West Ports under new non-exclusive license

The new license is for a period of five years, with further options commencing from 1 January 2019. Svitzer Australia Managing Director, Nicolaj Noes, says Svitzer is delighted to be able to continue to support Mid West Ports.

“Svitzer and its predecessors have been in operation in Geraldton for more than 30 years and we’re delighted to be able to continue to support Mid West Ports, our joint customers and secure the ongoing employment of more than 20 Geraldton locals,” Nicolaj says.

“The operation at Geraldton is a model of autonomy with crews that pride themselves on the quality and reliability of service to the Port and our customers.”

Svitzer will invest in three new 70-ton bollard pull tug boats for the operation. The three new tugs will be designed by the reputed naval architect firm, Robert Allan Limited, and are to be delivered in 2020.

The collaboration between Mid West Ports and Svitzer will ensure the Port of Geraldton’s towage needs are catered for now and into the future.
