J. Lauritzen has now joined the Getting to Zero Coalition – the industry-led platform with a goal to make zero-emission vessels (ZEVs) commercially viable from 2030, in line with the IMO’s goal to reduce emissions from shipping by 50% by 2050.
The Coalition is organised in partnership between the Global Maritime Forum, the World Economic Forum, and Friends of Ocean Action. It brings together leading stakeholders from the maritime, energy, infrastructure and financial sectors and is supported by key governments and intergovernmental organisations and the Coalition’s work is aligned with the goals set out in the IMO's Initial GHG Strategy.
J. Lauritzen CEO Mads P. Zacho said: “Joining the Getting to Zero Coalition is a natural step for J. Lauritzen as we believe that we have to work together across the related industries in order to take harmful emissions down to zero.
In recent years we have focused intensively on developing our technological capability so that we can optimise our vessels and operations for the best fuel efficiency. Through our partnership with Blue INNOship, we have developed voyage optimisation and hull added resistance monitoring tools that have allowed us to make strong voyage recommendations and plan hull cleaning in a way to significantly reduce GHG emissions.
We will, of course, continue the development of these tools and more, which have delivered fuel and emission savings for our fleet – and we continue to partner with other initiatives such as ECOPRODIGI. We are part of the Trident Alliance and have spoken openly about our preparations for the new sulphur regulations that are just around the corner.
We try to nurture a mindset that is open to technological change – with our employees both at sea and ashore – and be ready to embrace the technologies that are needed to ensure our business is environmentally sustainable in the face of climate change.
We need to be part of the movement to reduce emissions from shipping in line with the IMO’s Initial GHG Strategy and so I am very glad to join the Coalition as an important step towards Getting to Zero.”
