Liquefied natural gas (LNG) use by Japan’s power companies decreased 2% in April year-on-year, according to the preliminary data from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

Japan power companies use less LNG in Apr YoY

The power companies consumed 3.76 million mt of LNG in April as compared to 3.83 million mt in the same month last year.

As compared to the month before, LNG usage by the power companies dropped almost 29 percent.

On the other hand, April LNG purchases by the power companies were at 4.56 million mt, up by 8.4 percent on year and down 16.5 percent when compared to the previous month, the data shows.

To remind, Japan’s ten independent regional electric power companies stopped publishing power output and demand numbers in April 2016 to ensure fair competition after the liberalisation of the retail power market.

Currently, METI’s data is the only official data available on the monthly power statistics.
