5 Dead, 1 Missing after 2 Cargo Ships Collided

Five people died after collision of 2 cargo vessels south of Tokyo on Friday (September 27) reported the Japan Coast Guard. Rescue team is currently searching for another one crew member who is missing after the accident.

One of the collided vessels, Jia Hui is a Seirra Leone-flagged general cargo ship crashed with the Eifuku Maru No.18 cargo vessel and capsized it 7 nautical miles west of the island of Izu Oshima, according to the initial report of Yoshiuki Terakado, spokesman of the Janapanese Coast Guard.

Helicopters and patrol vessels of the Japanese Coast Guard were dispatched in the scene to search for the missing crew member. Another spokesman for the Japanese coast guard Koji Takarabe, stated that the five victims were found  in the capsized cargo ship Eifuku Maru No.18.

Onboard the general cargo ship Jia Hui were sailing 11 Chinese crew members and 1 Malay, all reported in good health condition. The cause of the collision between both cargo ships is still unclear and an investigation is being conducted by the Japanese Coast Guard.

The capsized cargo ship Eifuku Maru No.18 was headed from Nagoya en route to Ichikawa, east of Tokyo. The general cargo ship Jia Hui was sailing from Kawasaki, Japan to port of Busan in South Korea.
