This week Jumbo announced the winner of the competition to name our new DP2 Heavy Lift Crane Vessel (HLCV) to be delivered in the first quarter of 2020. Last month we launched an internal naming competition so that all Jumbo employees from around the world could submit up to three vessel name entries.
Having received over 250 entries, Michael Kahn with the competition committee made a top 3 list and then chose one overall winning name: Stella Synergy.
Michael Kahn says: “Stella Synergy is a beautiful name that captures the many elements of the Jumbo spirit – It symbolises Jumbo 50 years ago when we started as pioneers in the heavy lift industry with our first ‘Stella’ vessel. It also symbolises the complementary relationship between today’s shipping and offshore divisions, as well as the cooperation of the two families, namely Borchard and Kahn.
Most of all, Stella Synergy symbolises what we strive to achieve when we work together with our clients and as a team.‘’
The winning name was entered by Mr. Jiovanni Pardillo who has worked with Jumbo as an AB crew member since 2006. Michael Kahn telephoned Jiovanni in the Philippines to wish him congratulations personally and to inform him that he will receive a cash prize of 2,500 euros. This figure refers to the 2,500t lifting capacity of the main crane on the new vessel.
A model of Stella Synergy will be on display at the upcoming OTC exhibition in Houston 30 April – 03 May 2018.

SIMPLY SMARTER - VESSEL
This optimised HLCV has been designed together with Ulstein Design and Solutions B.V. to combine economic and technical efficiency with the highest quality and safety.
Environmental considerations and improved fuel efficiency have also been factored into the design where the vessel will be powered by dual-fuel engines and has the ability to run on natural gas (LNG).
The main crane of the HLVC will have a 2,500t capacity. Furthermore, Jumbo has opted for a triple hoist to allow for complex upending operations and also chose for an Active Heave Compensation (AHC) auxiliary block of 600mt with a depth rating of 3,000 metres. The second subsea crane will have capacity for 400t with an Active Heave Compensation (AHC) main hoist to control the position of a load relative to the seabed.
The hull will be outfitted with a state of the art X-BOW® enabling a significantly more consistent transit speed and offshore workability in severe weather conditions. With a vessel length of 185 metres and a width of 36 metres the HLCV will be the world’s largest X-BOW® vessel.
