Recently, “Seajacks Zaratan”, a self-elevating wind turbine installation vessel (WTIV) started offshore foundation installation work on the Akita Noshiro wind farm in Japan. The installation work is part of the construction of Japan’s first large commercial offshore wind farm.

ICE Designed Vessel installing Japan’s First Large Offshore Wind Farm

The GustoMSC type “Seajacks Zaratan” was built by Lamprell Energy, an Isle of Man registered fabricator with yards in the UAE. ICE acted as the main design and engineering contractor for Lamprell for this vessel, and as such developed Class drawings for ABS approval, produced a 3-D computer model and a full set of detail drawings, generated production information and assisted the yard with procurement.

ICE has substantial experience with design of several GustoMSC-type WTIVs now operated by Seajacks International and Fred. Olsen Windcarrier. In 2016, Fred. Olsen’s “Brave Tern” installed the turbines at the Block Island Wind Farm – the first offshore wind turbines in US waters.
