Monday this week was a milestone for more sustainable cruise tourism in Bergen. Then Viking Venus was connected to the new shore power facility for cruise ships in the Port of Bergen, and thus became the first ship to use the facility.

The first cruise ship connected to the new shore power facility in the Port of Bergen

"This is a big day for the Port of Bergen, emphasized acting port director Ulrik Jørgensen when he was present during the connection at Skolten quai.  When the cruise ships turn off the diesel engines and instead use electricity when they are at the quay, they contribute to cleaner air in Bergen, says Jørgensen.

In a statement from Viking Cruises it says:

“We congratulate Bergen that shore power is now available along the cruise quays in the harbor, and we are pleased to have the first cruise ship that connects during a regular cruise call to Bergen.

Viking is proud to have Bergen as its home port for our ships and to have built up the port into an international turning port for cruises in collaboration with our partners in Bergen. All of our ships that call at the port in the future will use the facility.”
