Colombo Dockyard launches latest ship Sophie Germain, built for Orange Marine

After 18 months of work, the C/S Sophie Germain of Orange Marine of France was launched today at the shipyard in Colombo. The Chief Executive Officer of Orange Marine Company, Didier Dillard, marked the launch of the ship.

C/S Sophie Germain was built by the Colombo Dockyard for the French cable laying company as a submarine cable-laying and repair vessel.

The basic design of the vessel, designed as an environmentally friendly vessel, has been done by a Norwegian company Vard, which specializes in designing special vessels. The detailed design of the vessel was carried out by Colombo Dockyard.

Colombo Dockyard Company in 2019 designed a 113-meter long submarine cable-laying vessel for Japan. Sophie Germain is the second vessel of its type. The vessel is also the first to be manufactured for Europe.

This new ship will be the first vessel of its generation designed specifically to repair submarine cables, whether optical fiber telecommunications cables or power cables connected to offshore wind farms. It will be cutting-edge and equipped with modern and efficient equipment, and it has been designed to reduce its environmental footprint by 20 percent.

Orange Marine said there is still more work to be done and the vessel is expected to reach La Seyne-sur-Mer, it future home port towards the end of the first half of 2023.
