The construction of the new German research vessel METEOR IV has reached another milestone: With the laying of the keel at the NEPTUN WERFT in Rostock, assembly of the hull began today. The MEYER Group is building the research ship together with the Lower Saxony shipyard FASSMER on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
"Only two months after the start of combustion, the assembly of the individual components for the METEOR IV begins. At our shipyards in Rostock and Papenburg, as well as together with the Fassmer shipyard, we have an experienced and powerful team working on this pioneering research ship," says Managing Director Thomas Weigend.
The Fassmer shipyard has extensive experience in building government and research ships and in working with ministries, while the MEYER Group brings its knowledge of building the research ship Sonne to the project.
The new METEOR IV has a length of about 125 meters and a measurement of about 10,000 GT. In addition to 35 scientists, there is space on board for 36 nautical and technical crew members. The METEOR IV is designed for worldwide multifunctional and interdisciplinary research use, with a focus on the Atlantic. The new building will make an important contribution to national and international marine research, particularly in the fields of climate and environmental research.
The research vessel METEOR IV is scheduled for delivery in 2026 and will replace the existing METEOR and the POSEIDON, which has already been decommissioned.
