Meridian Port Services Ltd (MPS), the operators of MPS Terminal 3 in the Port of Tema, are making significant strides in the global maritime arena, marking consecutive events of exceptional accomplishments.
The record-breaking week commenced with the arrival of Maersk EDIRNE, marking the inaugural voyage of the newly revamped joint service between Maersk Line and CMA-CGM.
The unloading and loading operations for the 7,128 TEU’s from/to Maersk EDIRNE were executed in 5,109 moves, including the handling of Hatch-Covers. The vessel productivity reached an unprecedented 169.92 BMPH (Berths Moved Per Hour), setting a new record.
In an interview with the MPS management team, Muhammad Rashid, Planning Manager, attributed the success to effective coordination with the lines’ global stowage team, resulting in optimal crane intensity. He emphasised strategic planning, which enabled a balanced crane-split and flexibility in deploying Ship-To-Shore Gantry Cranes during the call. Mr. Rashid highlighted the elimination of waiting time at anchorage, with operations commencing just 37 minutes after all-fast.
Emmanuel Ohene Addo, Operations Manager, showcased the team’s commitment to safety and adherence to standard operating procedures throughout the vessel call. He expressed gratitude for the cohesive effort of all workers and their dedication to a common goal.
Curtiss Dakpogan, COO, commended the collaborative effort across various departments required for this performance record. Mr. Dakpogan praised that teamwork, planning precision, and operational focus are key to success. Through this achievement, MPS reaffirms its commitment to providing unparalleled operational efficiency in the region. MPS aims to maintain its position as the first port of choice for shipping lines in West Africa.

Mr. Samara complimented the team’s dedication to operational excellence and expressed confidence in entering the 200 BMPH league through sustained collaboration with shipping lines.
While this remarkable accomplishment serves as a testament to the solid determination, and commitment to excellence exhibited by the MPS team. Within 24 hours of the berthing of Maersk EDIRNE, the Tema Port Marine Team (GPHA Pilot and Tugboats) skilfully guided in the MSC EVA to berth next to the Maersk EDIRNE.
MSC EVA called major ports in China then Singapore following which it proceeded to the Port of Colombo where it departed on 1st January 2024. It subsequently arrived at Tema (1st port of call in West Africa) in 17 days thereby significantly slashing the transit time.
The successful berthing of MSC EVA next to Maersk EDIRNE showcased the sheer size of the harbour basin and capabilities of MPS Terminal 3 at Tema Port. The sight of these large vessels, both with LOA of 366 meters, alongside occupying half of the 1400m quay wall, was a remarkable moment for MPS Terminal 3.
Determined to establish Tema Port as the hub port on the West Coast of Africa, the terminal’s record-breaking week reflects MPS’ commitment to excellence.
