STX O&S and John Fredriksen in deal for up to six VLCCs

STX Offshore & Shipbuilding (O&S) and John Fredriksen has inked a deal for the construction of up to six VLCCs.

According to the South Korean shipbuilder, the order from the oil tanker magnate comprises two firm orders with an option for additional four. The cost of the vessels was not disclosed.

Each of the VLCCs will be with length of 330 m and width of 60 m. The first two 300,000-DWT tankers are scheduled for delivery during the first six months of 2017.

Although the vessels were ordered privately by Fredriksen, reports indicate that the VLCCs will be offered to Frontline 2012.

Having been the leader in LR1 product tankers orders, STX O&S believes the latest VLCCs order indicates that the shipbuilder could strengthen its position in the big and mid-sized tankers market.
