ABB's new Azipod D electric propulsion system has been awarded “Innovation of the Year” at the renowned Electric & Hybrid Marine World Expo, held this week in Amsterdam.

The award recognizes the important contribution of the Azipod D to advancing modern shipping. Having been selected by an international 38-member jury of academics, industry experts and maritime journalists, the new electric propulsion system was praised for its higher energy efficiency, flexibility and reliability.

Furthermore, ABB has been awarded, for a second consecutive year, as Propulsion Manufacturer of the Year.

The President of ABB’s Process Automation division, Peter Terwiesch, commented:

“We are delighted that our latest addition to ABB’s electric propulsion portfolio is recognized as Innovation of the Year, and that electric propulsion continues to grow many times faster than the world’s fleet.

“The flexibility and fuel efficiency of electric propulsion is a key enabler to performance and competitiveness in shipping.”
