South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) held a keel laying ceremony of Petronas’ second floating liquefaction plant, the Petronas Floating LNG2 (PFLNG2), in Geoje Island, South Korea on 28 October.
The keel laying signifies the formal recognition of the start of the mega construction phase of the PFLNG2 with a collective weight of 134,000 tonnes.
PFLNG2 with a capacity of 1.5 million tonnes per annum (mtpa), and designed for deep-water, is expected to commission in 2018.
The second floating LNG facility will enable the liquefaction, production and offloading processing of natural gas in the Rotan field, 130 kilometers offshore Sabah, Petronas said.
A consortium of companies, consisting of CB&I, MODEC, IHI Corporation and Toyo Engineering Corporation was selected by Petronas and MISC for a FEED contract to develop their second floating natural gas liquefaction facility to capitalize on the availability of the gas resulting from the development of several gas fields offshore Malaysia.
The Petronas Floating LNG1 (PFLNG1), also under construction in Okpo, South Korea has achieved more than 95 per cent overall progress in its construction.
The construction is entrusted to Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. Ltd (DSME) and Technip. PFLNG1, with a capacity of 1.2 mtpa is expected to commission in early 2016.
