A cargo ship carrying 57.500 tons of wheat from Russia to Egypt's Alexandria ran aground in Istanbul's Ahırkapı district in the Marmara Sea on Sunday (Dec 6) at 8:05 local time.
The 229-meter long bulk carrier Wadi Safaga was repeatedly warned by officials for sailing too close to land, reports said.
The tug Kurtarma 8 and the lifeboat Kiyem 3 were dispatched to the vessel. In the morning of Dec 7 the lifeboat Kiyi Emniyeti 4 was alongside the vessel.
Officials stated that the ship is not harmed and does not pose a threat of pollution.
