Ferry Royal Iris of The Mersey with 69 passengers grounded at Manchester Ship canal near the Eastham. The vessel was on a day cruise from Seacombe to Salford Quays along the Manchester Ship canal, but grounded into a sandbank after steering gear failure.
The hull of the ferry was breached and ensuing water ingress. The crew requested assistance from the local authorities. Nearby dredger was used to pump out water from the flooded compartments, as always used to evacuate the passengers from the grounded ferry Royal Iris of The Mersey. All the people were transfered to the dredger without injuries and according to local authorities passengers weren’t actually in real danger.
The local authorities started investigation for the root cause of the incident. The water ingress was put under control and ferry Royal Iris of The Mersey was taken to Eastham lock system and docked at Eastham for further repair and inspections.
