A tragedy occurred on board of the Passenger/Ro-Ro Cargo Ship Sansovino in the afternoon of Nov 29, 2016, at the Norimberga pier in Messina, Italy.

Three Sansovino’s crewmembers died and 6 more intoxicated from release of toxic fumes

Five crew members were tasked with cleaning a fuel tank.

A sudden release of toxic fumes from oil residues killed three of them, one was hospitalized in critical condition.

As it became known later, nine crew suffered intoxications, including those who died. Other crew members who hurried to assist also inhaled poisonous gas.
