The cruise ship Le Boréal has been lifted on board the Chinese dock ship Kang Sheng Kou of COSCO Heavy Transport in Punta Arenas under contract of the Dutch Offshore Contractors on Jan 15, 2016.
The ship is to be repaired on a European yard until May 9.
On November 18, 2015 the 10,000-tonne cruise ship was damaged due to a major engine room fire. The fire caused the loss of all power and left the ship drifting in the waters near the Falkland Islands. A north-westerly gale placed the ship in real danger of grounding on Cape Dolphin, East Falkland.
The master ordered the ship, with 347 passengers and crew, to be abandoned. The Falkland Islands Government in co-operation with the British Forces enacted a major search and rescue plan and all passengers and crew were rescued.
